In recent years, focusing on the solution to major environmental problems such as national sponge city construction, polluted water treatment, drainage and waterlogging prevention, urban rainwater control and utilization and comprehensive water environment management have gradually become the major characteristics of the discipline. Expertise has been provided to serve the construction of sponge cities in more than 30 cities across the country, including Beijing, Dalian, Jinan and Baicheng. In addition, centering on problems such as solid waste treatment, disposal, and recycling, the discipline characteristics of construction waste recycling, domestic waste and electronic waste treatment and disposal have been gradually formed to serve the construction of waste-free cities across the country.
【Faculties and Achievements】
Over 20 years of development of the discipline, a teaching team with reasonable structure and excellent teaching and research capabilities has been formed and the teaching level is at the forefront of universities in environmental sciences across the country. Of the faculties, those with doctoral degrees account for 92%, those with overseas experience account for 52%, and 13 outstanding teachers are granted provincial and ministerial honorary titles. Over the past 3 years, the publication includes 10 textbooks, 2 mid-term national planning textbooks, 6 books; professors or lecturers have presided over 6 teaching and research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial level and 13 at campus level; faculties have been fully engaging in the teaching and research projects with 4 achievement awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level.
In the past 5 years, the faculties have won 4 provincial and ministerial awards such as China Award for Science and Technology in Construction and Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, undertaken 35 vertical projects above the provincial or ministerial level, an average of 1.5 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation (general and youth) per person, and 67 various horizontal projects, published 11 highly cited papers, issued 3 national standards and co-issued 8 standards of various kinds. The faculties have also made contributions to major projects such as the construction of the national sponge city, waste-free city, Xiong’an New Area, Beijing Sub-center, and Beijing Daxing International Airport.

Over the past three years, the students have won a total of 64 awards in various competitions of innovative practice and science and technology, such as “Challenge Cup” and China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition, including 22 national-level awards, 1 provincial-level special award, 13 first prizes and 24 second prizes. Since 2019, “Beijing College Students’ Energy Conservation, Water Conservation, Low Carbon and Emission Reduction Social Practice and Technology Competition” has been held annually. The quality of the students’ graduation design has been praised by experts on and off the campus, chief engineers of design institutes and evaluation experts of the Ministry of Education. In 2017, 2018, and 2020 respectively, the undergraduates have won the awards of outstanding graduation design of universities of environmental sciences across the country.
The employment rate of graduates majoring in environmental engineering has remained excellent and kept at a high level of 100% over the past three years. Many students have been employed by China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, China Architecture Design & Research Group, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, China Water Environment Group, Beijing Enterprises Water Group Limited, Poten Environment Group, Beijing Municipal Research Institute of Environmental Protection, Beijing Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd.，Beijing Drainage Group Co., Ltd., and Beijing Waterworks Group Co., Ltd. The graduates’ employment quality, recognition by the employers and social influence are among the top of the university.
