Thirteen Top Domestic Architectural Design Institutes Gathered at BUCEA to Discuss Innovative Talent Cultivation against the Background of “

On April 20th, “The Seminar on the Interactive Development of Education, Research and Production under the 14th Five-Year Plan based on the Off-campus Teaching and Scientific Research Field Base” was held at the Xicheng campus of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA). A total of 13 leading institutes in the field of planning and architecture design, including China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, China Architecture Design & Research Group, Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning and Design, Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd, and Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Urban Planning and Design Institute, were invited to discuss cooperation, seek common development, and explore the new model of innovative talent cultivation under the background of “New Engineering” Construction. President Zhang Ailin, Vice President Zhang Dayu, and relevant responsible personnel from the School of Science and Development, Graduate School, Students Office, Personnel Office, Student Affairs Department (Office) and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning attended the event.

In the welcoming address, President ZHANG Ailin pointed out that as a university based in and serving the capital, BUCEA has long been adhering to the characteristic positioning of fully reflecting the style of Beijing and architecture. On behalf of the University, he expressed greeting and gratitude to the institutes invited to the seminar since over years of development, the University has been greatly supported by those top design institutes based in the capital. He hoped that the University and enterprises would jointly strengthen cooperation and construction, earnestly study and implement the guidance of President XI Jinping during the inspection of Tsinghua University, fully engage in the interactive development of education, research and production to break the disciplinary barriers, bridge the gap between teaching and practice, and promote the transformation and upgrading of disciplines and majors. He also mentioned that the University and institutes need to jointly cultivate high-level innovative talents that were adaptive to the new stage of national development and the new needs of industry to contribute more to the urban and rural construction of the capital and even the whole country.

Reviewing years of cooperation between the University and various design institutes, Vice President ZHANG Dayu summed up the important role of each design institute in the University’s talent training, discipline construction and scientific research and expressed sincere gratitude. As for the country and industry’s new development requirements for talent training in the fields of heritage protection, urban renewal, smart construction, and rural revitalization, he hoped that design institutes would provide more opinions and suggestions as reference for the University’s future reform and development. He also hoped that the participating institutes would provide more internship and employment opportunities for the students of the University in the future and the University would continue to cultivate and deliver outstanding design talents to various institutes.

On behalf of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Professor ZHANG Jie, National Engineering Survey and Design Master of China and Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, expressed gratitude to the leaders of the participating institutes and emphasized that within the design industry community formed together by the University and various design institutes, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning would continue to deepen the university-enterprise cooperation in teaching, scientific research and practice to jointly promote the development of the industry.

All participants exchanged ideas and gave speeches. Relevant leaders and experts thought highly of the long-term, systematic and close cooperation between the University and various design institutes as well as the University’s quality talents cultivation. The participating institutes all agreed that the graduates were diligent, hard-working and practical and expressed willingness to employ or provide internship to more undergraduates, masters and Ph.D. students of the University. The participating institutes also expressed their willingness to deepen cooperation with the University in the future and put forward specific paths and suggestions to guide the cooperation.

At the seminar, in-depth exchanges were carried out and many consensuses were reached in terms of the development of “New Engineering” Construction, talent cultivation and scientific research cooperation mode, young teachers’ practical training, and student employment. The first is that the “New Engineering” Construction emphasized by President XI needs to be fully understood and to align with the new development trend of big data and carbon neutrality emerging in the industry, the University needs to join hands with different institutes to strengthen the integration of disciplines and majors and cultivate comprehensive and innovative talents of engineering and architecture. The second is to invite senior architects to classroom teaching so that the development needs of the industry can be incorporated into the teaching content. The third is to establish a team of on-campus and off-campus master and doctoral tutors with strong scientific research and practical capabilities to promote the level of postgraduate education. The fourth is to jointly establish the think tank of capital city planning and construction which will provide basic theoretical and experience support to government decision-making and talent cultivation of engineering and architecture. The fifth is to carry out guidance on the all-round talent development and employment targeting the career training of undergraduates, masters and doctors, the improvement of young teachers’ practical capacities, and the training of young architectural designer of the institutes. This seminar will be conducive to the great stride of the University in the new era and the rapid and high-quality advancement of the capital city construction.
