2022 Beijing International Urban Design Forum grandly opens: BUCEA’s Three-Year Action Plan for Serving Beijing’s Building People’s City officially released

On November 19th, 2022 Beijing International Urban Design Forum grandly opened in Zhangjiawan Design Town, Beijing’s sub-center. With the theme of “Urban Renewal and High Quality Development”, the forum brought together more than 100 well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad in the field of urban design and urban renewal, and conducted academic exchanges on key areas such as the contemporary cutting-edge theory and practice of urban renewal, the methods of cultural heritage protection and historical city renewal, the modes of residential area renewal and community governance, and the application of new technologies in urban renewal, so as to accurately serve the implementation of Beijing’s urban renewal actions and enhance the quality and vitality of Beijing’s urban space.

At the forum,  BUCEA’s Three-Year Action Plan for Serving Beijing’s Building People’s City  was released. The  Action Plan  puts forward a central goal of “helping Beijing build itself into a satisfactory city for people”, arranges eight key tasks such as heritage protection and active utilization, ecological restoration and environmental governance, and clarifies five measures such as creating new talent training mode and optimizing team building system. BUCEA will persist in its innovation-driven mode, and strive to make new and greater contributions in the process of building people’s cities with a focus on major issues and practical needs in Beijing’s urban and rural construction.

The forum was guided by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, hosted by BUCEA, the Architectural Society of China (ASC), China Architectural Culture Center and Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD), and undertaken by Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Future Urban Design, Institute of Urban Design, ASC, the Belt and Road Architectural University International Consortium (BRAUIC) and Future Design Institute of BIAD.

Keynote speakers

The forum lasted for two days. On November 19th, the keynote speeches were respectively presided over by ZHUANG Weimin, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University, member of academic committee of Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Future Urban Design of BUCEA; ZHANG Jie, National Engineering Survey and Design Master, Distinguished Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of BUCEA; ZHANG Yu, National Engineering Survey and Design Master, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee, Vice Chairman and General Manager of BIAD; and Professor LI Aiqun, Vice President of BUCEA.

Guests delivering keynote speeches

This forum can be described as a gathering of masters, and a feast in the field of urban design in China. Experts and scholars from Southeast University, University of Pennsylvania, Tongji University, China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD), MAD Architects, Xiamen University, Harvard University, BUCEA, China Architecture Design & Research Group (CADG), University College London (UCL), delivered speeches on key researches and innovations in major areas of contemporary urban renewal theory and strategic choice, practical exploration, etc.

High-end dialogue session

On the afternoon of November 19th, in the high-end dialogue session, six industry-renowned experts from Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources, Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning and Design, BUCEA and CAUPD, who are engaged in the research and practice of capital renewal, carried out on-the-spot sharing and dialogue on how to promote high-quality urban development through urban renewal, integrate into the new development pattern, transform the urban development and construction mode and economic growth mode, and meet the people’s needs for a better life, etc. They also shared their prospects on the capital renewal work in the new period, and provided new ideas for improving the quality of urban renewal work in the next stage.

Eight thematic forums gather wisdom

On November 20th, eight thematic forums were held concurrently on the campus of BUCEA, focusing on the topics of “Cutting-Edge Theory and Practice of Urban Renewal”, “Cultural Heritage Protection and Historical City Renewal”, “Resilient City Design and Sustainable Development”, “Green Renewal and Carbon Neutrality”, “Residential Area Renewal and Community Governance”, “Urban Infrastructure Renewal and Comprehensive Disaster Prevention”, “Urban Renewal Business Model and Operation Innovation”, “Emerging Smart Technology and Future Urban Space Construction”, etc. Domestic and foreign experts, scholars and well-known designers were invited to carry out thematic exchanges and discussions.

The forum also specially held a symposium on “Urban Design Education and Talent Cultivation” and the Urban Design Workshop. The symposium focused on theory teaching, practice teaching, employment channel and other issues in urban design talent cultivation. The Workshop brought together teachers and students from six universities, including Tsinghua University, Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Beijing Forestry University (BJFU), BUCEA, Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) and North China University of Technology (NCUT), to carry out conceptual design research under the theme of “Urban Renewal in Liulichang District of Beijing”.

To promote the discussion and exchange of young designers, the forum set up the BRAUIC Young Scholars Forum, the Young Designers Forum of Urban Protection and Renewal Practice, and the Young Scholars Forum of Traditional Village Protection and Development.

Beijing International Urban Design Forum, sponsored by BUCEA, has been successfully held for six consecutive years since 2016. Each year it invites famous experts at home and abroad and world-class masters to conduct exchanges and discussions around hot-spot issues and challenging problems in urban design, and contributes innovative ideas with international vision, becoming a “golden business card” in the field of capital urban design. The forum this year was held both online and offline, attracting more than 300,000 people including domestic and foreign experts and scholars, college teachers and students, and social actors in the field of urban planning, design and construction.
