She has long been committed to the theoretical and methodological research, key technological research, organization and implementation of major projects, and talent training in the field of geospatial information acquisition and modeling. She has presided over a number of national, provincial, and ministerial scientific research and engineering projects; won 1 second prize for scientific and technological progress award and a number of provincial and ministerial prizes for scientific and technological progress; published over 80 academic papers; and presided over the compilation of 9 national standards. She was selected as the March 8 Red Flag Bearer and an advanced worker in the national surveying and mapping system; and won special government allowance of the State Council for “Women’s Meritorious Deeds” and Xia Jianbai Prize for Surveying and Mapping Entrepreneurship and Scientific and Technological Innovation.

A rigorous scholar with a pioneering and innovative spirit

Prof. JIANG Jie has adhered to a rigorous attitude towards scholarship and persisted in pioneering and innovation, having achieved outstanding research achievements for many years. From 2008 to 2016, as the chief engineer and implementation director, she presided over the top-level technical design, key technology research and development, projet organization and implementation, and daily operations and management of Map World, the national platform for common geospatial information services. The platform is the first operational geospatial information cloud service platform that realizes distributed coordination. The project won 1 second prize of the National Prize for Progress in Sience and Technology and 1 outstanding prize, 1 first prize, and multiple second and third prizes of provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. Such achievement has played a huge role in promoting the sharing of government information resources, the extensive application of geospatial information, and the development of the geospatial information industry. The standards, technologies, products and services thus formed have constituted a nationwide Map World industrial chain and ecosystem.

From 2014 to 2019, as the person in charge of technical implementation, JIANG Jie actively promoted the construction of large-scale geospatial information resources based on domestic high-resolution satellite images, and presided over the system demand analysis, overall technical design, and data production technology R&D and application demonstration of a global mapping technology system based on domestic high-resolution satellite images, completed high-precision basic geographic data within about 25 million square kilometers along the Belt and Road. Such efforts played an important role in promoting regional cooperation. The project won the first prize of scientific and technological progress awards in surveying and mapping (Prof. Jiang's name ranking 2nd).

From 2002 to 2014, as the person in charge of the National E-Government Project “National Natural Resources and Geospatial Basic Information Database (Surveying and Mapping Sub-Center) ”, JIANG Jie presided over the design and development of a national basic geospatial framework database and built a data sharing and service system based on the E-Government network, providing solid support for the development and application of E-Government projects. The project won the first prize of provincial and ministerial prize for progress in science and technology (Prof. Jiang's name ranking 1st).

From 2000 to 2022, JIANG Jie has long been engaged in promoting the construction of navigation map standards and databases. She presided over the preparation of national standards “Data model and data exchange format for navigable spatial database” (GB/T 19711), “ Data model and representation for indoor map” (GB/T 41445), “Specification for collecting and processing in-car navigable geographic data” (GB/T 20268) ), “ Indoor multi-dimensional location information GML” (GB/T 35627), “Indoor and outdoor multi-mode cooperative positioning service interface” (GB/T 35629), etc., filling multiple gaps in domestic navigation geospatial data standards. She also presided over the design and implementation of “National Multi-Scale Navigation Electronic Map System Construction” and “Electronic Map Resource Sharing Platform for Satellite Navigation Applications”, having built the first nationwide navigation geospatial framework database in China, which has been widely used by navigation companies. The relevant achievements won the second prize of provincial and ministerial prize for progress in science and technology (Prof. Jiang's name ranking 1st).

Promoting international and domestic academic and technical exchanges and cooperation

Since 1998, JIANG Jie has served as the head of the ISPRS Working Group, Secretary of the ISPRS Technical Commissions, and President of the ISPRS Technical Commissions. In 2022, JIANG Jie was elected as the Secretary-General of ISPRS on behalf of the Chinese surveying and mapping community. This indicates that the scientific and technological capacity and comprehensive strength of China’s surveying and mapping industry have been highly recognized by international colleagues, and that the influence of China in the field of international photogrammetry and remote sensing has been further enhanced. This is conducive to further promoting the exchanges and cooperation between Chinese scholars, research institutions, enterprises and institutions with international colleagues and the international development of photogrammetry, remote sensing, and geoinformatics in China.

From 2012 to 2019, as the Head of the Working Group of UN-GGIM-AP, JIANG Jie has actively promoted regional geospatial information sharing and coordinated international cooperation organizations based on China’s surveying and mapping technology and achievements to hold three technical training sessions for developing countries. During these sessions, officials and backbone technicians from surveying and mapping institutions from over 30 countries came to China to learn about Chinese technologies and products.

Meanwhile, JIANG Jie also holds positions at the Chinese Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography, China Association for Geospatial Industry and Sciences, and GNSS & LBS Association of China. By actively organizing various academic and technical exchanges, she enjoys a great influence in the community.

Combining teaching with research and growing together with the team

Professor JIANG Jie serves as a part-time professor at Wuhan University, Central South University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Jilin University, China University of Mining and Technology, and Capital Normal University, having trained over 40 master and doctoral students. As a teacher, she adopts a heuristic method for undergraduate and postgraduate education, designing and teaching the course “Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology Research Methodology”. The course applies methods including the introduction of application prospects, practice teaching combined with application, interactive seminars, and domestic and foreign academic exchanges in order to stimulate students’ interest in learning, improve their engagement in the discipline, and gradually develop an independent and research-based learning model.

She has actively promoted exchanges and cooperation between the research team of the School of Geomatics & Urban Spatial Informatics of BUCEA and excellent teams at home and abroad, applying for various scientific and technological projects with domestic high-level universities and research institutions, carrying out multi-dimensional cooperation and preparing for international joint laboratories with leading enterprises in the industry, and jointly training students with well-known professors at home and abroad, etc.

She has led the BUCEA team to host or undertake impactful academic activities at home and abroad. In 2019, she hosted the “Resource and Environmental Remote Sensing Monitoring” academic annual meeting of the Professional Committee of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing of the Chinese Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography. The event was attended by four academicians and over 500 experts and scholars from 63 Chinese universities and 76 research institutes, government agencies, enterprises and institutions in relevant fields. In 2018, 2021, and 2022, she hosted the ISPRS summer schools. In 2020 and 2021, she hosted sub-forums in the annual meetings of the GNSS & LBS Association of China and co-hosted a number of ISPRS Technical Commissions Conferences and training sessions on spatial data infrastructure in developing countries under the Asian Regional Cooperation Special Fund Project.
