BUCEA 2025 New Year Greetings

Dear faculty, students, alumni, and friends from all sectors of society,

As we welcome the year 2025, we are filled with excitement and hope for what’s to come. In this season of renewal, on behalf of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA), we would like to extend our sincere greetings and best wishes to all students, faculty, staff, retired colleagues, alumni at home and abroad, and all those who have long supported the development of our university.

In 2024, BUCEA focused on the integration of education, technology, and talent development, striving to become a high-level and distinctive university for the new era. We accelerated the development of high-level disciplines and programs, introducing four new Ph.D. programs, namely Geomatics and Geo-Informatics, Environmental Science and Engineering, Urban and Rural Planning, and Landscape Architecture, making us the leader in the number of newly added Ph.D. programs among Beijing’s municipal universities and all architecture universities nationwide. Our Chemistry discipline achieved a historic breakthrough by entering the top 1% of global ESI rankings.

We launched the  Three-Year Action Plan for Accelerating the Promotion of Artificial Intelligence+ , established the School of Intelligence Science and Technology, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Plus, and the Institute for Advanced Materials, and partnered with industry leaders like China Datang Corporation to establish the School of New Energy Technologies and Modern Industries. BUCEA secured 28 undergraduate teaching development projects of Beijing’s universities, setting a new record. Our graduate employment rates remained among the top among all Beijing’s municipal universities. Our students won 357 awards in various competitions at provincial and ministerial levels or above, including a gold medal at the national “Challenge Cup” competition (which marked the reception of national awards in this competition for 11 consecutive years) and a national runner-up at the China Robot Competition. At the international level, our architecture students won another UIA Award.

We have created a strong talent pool, with two new national-level experts and six new provincial- and ministerial- level key talents. Ten faculty members have been included in the global top 2% of scientists. We achieved a historic milestone by having our first faculty members selected for national-level overseas high-level talent programs. Additionally, our young teachers were selected as leading talents in the “Xirong Talent” program launched by Beijing Xicheng District for the first time.

Our large multi-functional shaking table matrix laboratory, representing the leading level both domestically and internationally, has passed the acceptance review, significantly enhancing our capability to serve national key research needs. We have also been approved for establishing multiple provincial- and ministerial- level research platforms, including the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Engineering Technology Innovation Center for Construction Waste Resource Utilization and the Beijing Key Laboratory of Super Intelligent Technology for Urban Architecture. The number of these platforms ranks among the top in China’s architecture universities and Beijing’s municipal universities. BUCEA also published its first paper in a  Nature  research journal as the main contributor. Over the year, it received 71 research and industry awards at provincial and ministerial levels or above, including its first-ever gold medal at iENA 2024 (76th International Exhibition for Ideas, Inventions, and New Products) in Nuremberg. It led six projects that won Beijing Science and Technology Awards, ranking first among municipal universities and third in all universities in Beijing. It played an active role in the protection and renovation of ancient architecture along the Central Axis, and the promotion and interpretation of cultures applying for inclusion on the World Heritage List. Additionally, BUCEA led the renovation of Deshengmen Inner Street and established strategic collaborations with over 20 central enterprises and industry leaders including China State Construction Engineering Corporation, China Academy of Building Research, and China Construction Technology Consulting Co., Ltd., fostering innovation through industry-university-research partnerships.

The Belt and Road Architectural University International Consortium (BRAUIC) has expanded membership to 91 universities and enterprises from 30 countries. We continued to host the 2024 BRAUIC Conference & Forum, the Belt and Road International Student Competition on Digital Architectural Design, International Summer School on Smart Cities, and Global Campus: Exchange Program for Summer Schools. Additionally, we made our mark in Africa by establishing the “Sino-Ethiopian International Talent Training and Practice Base in Civil and Transportation Engineering”, our first international talent training base overseas. Our distinguished professor Mark van Loosdrecht received the Great Wall Friendship Award.

In 2024, we launched the operation of the shaking table laboratory and started construction on the 11th student dormitory building. We also saw the successful launch of AI+ initiatives and two new research institutes. Our student teams won 51 first prizes in sports competitions at provincial and ministerial levels or above and took home top awards across all categories in the Beijing College Students Music Festival.

Looking ahead to 2025, we will continue to build BUCEA as a higher-level and distinctive university and strive to open a new chapter of development in the new era.

Wish our country prosperity and strength, wish BUCEA continuous growth, and may everyone enjoy good health, happiness, and success in the year ahead!
