From October 13 to 17, the 14th National Structure Design Contest for College Students was held in Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiaotong University. BUCEA’s team participated by TAN Xixue, LI Liuhuan, and LIU Zixuan, undergraduates of the School of Civil and Transportation Engineering (supervised by Professor HOU Suwei and Professor WU Yifeng), competed with 112 teams from 111 universities including Tsinghua University, Tongji University, and Zhejiang University in the national competition. Finally, BUCEA won the second prize which was the best result in recent years. The university also won the Outstanding Organization Award.

The National Structure Design Contest for College Students is one of the first 9 college student discipline contest projects approved and financed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. As the largest student innovation contest in civil engineering of the highest level, it is praised as the jewel-in-the-crown contest in civil engineering. The 14th National Structure Design Contest for College Students attracted 1,148 teams from 550 universities of 31 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions).

Themed on “Design and Production of Bridge Structure Model with Variable Parameters”, the contest adopted the form of “random parameters + design computation + on-site production + presentation and defense + loading test”. Participants were required to design and make a bridge model within 16.5 hours using materials like bamboo barks, bamboo strips, and glue to respectively sustain multiple scattered vertical concentrated static load, the eccentric load generated by moving the static load, and bridge deck live load. The model “Bridge of Solidarity” made by BUCEA’s team weighed 207.2 g and carried 338 times its own load (total load of 70 kg, including the maximum single point load of 32 kg and dynamic load of 5 kg).
