BUCEA 2024 International Student Enrollment Guide for Postgraduates in Chinese

Beijing University of Civil Engineering & Architecture (BUCEA), whichoriginated from Capital Elementary Industrial School in 1907, got its currentname with the approval of the Ministry of Education, P. R. China in 2013. It is amultidisciplinary university focusing on engineering especially known forarchitecture. The university was approved as a Master’s degree awardinginstitution in 1986 and a doctor's degree awarding institution in 2018. It hasalso been approved to establish post-doctoral research stations in architectureand civil engineering.The university has over 10,000 students, including over 80international students.It has formed a comprehensive and multi-level education system from undergraduate, master's to doctoral students, from full-time to international students, and adult education.

The university insists on opening-up policy and extensively carries outinternational exchanges and cooperation. In 2017, it initiated the establishmentof the “One Belt One Road” International Alliance of Architecture Universities.Currently, 84 colleges and universities from 28 countries have joined, whichhas made important contributions to continuously deepen the “Belt and Road”initiative, as well as comprehensively promote the infrastructure construction ofcountries along the route, the training of international talents, the collaborativeinnovation of science and technology, and the cultural exchanges.

I. Applicant Qualification

1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens who are in good health and holda valid ordinary foreign passport.

If the applicant has foreign nationality at birth but does not have Chinese nationality since both or one of the parents of the applicant are Chinese citizens and reside in a foreign country; or if the applicant is a mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan resident who have immigrated and acquired the foreign nationality, should hold valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for more than 4 years (inclusive). The applicant must have resided in a foreign country for more than 2 years in the recent 4 years (before April 30 of the year of admission) (the actual residing in a foreign country for more than 9 months in a year can be counted as one year, subject to the entry and exit signature).

2. Applicants for PhD generally shall be no more than40 years old (as of September 1, 2024).Applicants for master’s degree generally shall be no more than 35 years old(as of September 1, 2024).

3. Applicants for PhD shall have obtained master's degree or equivalent. Applicants for master’s degree shall have obtained bachelor's degree orequivalent.

Note:

(1) The major of Architecture accepts candidates majoring in Architecture, Historic Building conservation Engineering, urban planning, Landscape architecture , Industrial Design and Art Design. The research direction of Architectural Technology science under the major of Architecture of the School of Architecture only accepts candidates majoring in Architecture and civil Engineering. Architectural Heritage Conservation Accepts candidates majoring in architecture, historic building conservation engineering, urban planning, landscape architecture , and cultural heritage conservation.

(2) The major of Urban and Rural Planning accepts candidates majoring in urban planning, Architecture and Landscape architecture.

(3) Design Majors accept candidates majoring in Design, Art Design, Landscape Design, fine arts, Architecture, Industrial arts, Exhibition Art and Technology, Public Art, and Landscape Architecture.

(4) Master's degree students majoring in Architecture, Architectural Heritage Conservation, Urban and Rural Planning, and Design are not allowed to apply from different majors.

(5) Social Work Majors are: Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Social Policy, Urban management, Law.

(6) If the above enrollment policies and procedures are inconsistent with the regulations issued by the Ministry of Education and the relevant education departments, the relevant documents of the Ministry of Education and the relevant education departments shall be implemented.

4. Master's degree and PhD are full-time education. Once applicants enroll, it is not allowed to do the internship or work except for academic requirements by BUCEA. Once a violation isfound, student who refuses to change after admonition will be handled aswithdrawing from university.

II. Application Deadline

June 16, 2024 (Application will not be accepted after the deadline).

III. Application Procedures

Applicants shall apply online at http://apply.bucea.cucas.cn/ by filling ininformation and uploading application materials online. Applicants areexpected to check their online application accountand emails regularly, as BUCEA’s Admissions Office may contact them whennecessary.

IV. Application Documents

Applicants must provide true and correct information in all applicationdocuments in the online application system:

1. Please complete “Application Form for International Students” in online application system. Please complete in Chinese or English.

2. To apply for a PhD program, applicants shall submit their graduate diplomaor submit their pre-graduation certificates or certificate of enrollment issued by the school (they must get their graduatediploma of master before September 2024).

To apply for a master’s program, applicants shall submit their undergraduatediploma or submit their pre-graduation certificates or certificate of enrollment issued by the school (they must get theirundergraduate diploma before September 2024).

3. To apply to study for a PhD program, the graduating students shall submittheir academic transcripts during the academic years, and the graduatedstudents shall submit their complete transcripts during the postgraduateperiod.

To apply for a master’s program, the graduating students shall submittheir academic transcripts during the academic years, and the graduatedstudents shall submit their complete transcripts during the undergraduateperiod. Transcripts should be issued by the school.

4. Study or Research Plan.

The Plan should be no less than 1,000 words, written in Chinese.

5. To apply for a PhD program, the graduate students shall submit at least two Letters of Recommendation signed by professors within the professional field of the discipline applied, written in Chinese or English.

To apply for a master’s program, the undergraduate students shall submit two Letters of Recommendation signed by professors or associateprofessors, written in Chinese or English.

6. Language Proficiency Certificate.

(1) Chinese proficiency requirements

Applicants shall submit a HSK4 qualification certificate within valid period.Applicants who have taken all courses in Chinese during their bachelor’s ormaster’s degree studies are exempt from the HSK certificate requirement, ifproof of teaching in Chinese from the graduated university is provided.

(2) English proficiency requirements

The TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic transcript can be provided as an auxiliarymaterial for the application.

7. Scanned copy of valid passport. The passport should be validthrough December 31, 2024.

Applicants who are indicated in "I. Applicant Qualification, 1" should submit scanned copies of the first page of their passports that valid more than 4 years, scanned copies of their exit and entry signatures and seals that could show they have actually lived abroad for more than 2 years in the recent 4 years, and scanned copies of "naturalization certificates" issued by the foreign passport country.

8. CV or resume, completed in Chinese or English.

9. Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in Chinese or English,bearing the stamp of the hospital. Physical examination results are valid for 6months.

10. Applicants needs to provide materials which can reveal the applicants’ academic level, such as dissertations, acollection of design works or a published academic paper of your major.To apply for a PhD program, the graduate students shall provide graduation dissertation (or draft).

11.Applicants can provide proof of internship or work, proof of awards or scholarships, and proof of participation in academic activities assupplementary materials.

Note:

(1) All the application materials in languages other than Chinese or Englishmust be accompanied by the original copy and its notarized translation inChinese or English. It is advised to have the original copy and its translationnotarized at the Chinese Embassy in the applicant’s home country. Pleasestamp on the edges of all sheets with part of the impression on each sheet ifthe document consists of more than one page.

(2) Applicants are expected to submit a complete set of application materialsand will be held accountable for the authenticity of their documents.Incomplete or forged materials will be rejected.

(3) In general, there is no need to mail original hard-copy materials throughcourier service. However, under extraordinary circumstances, BUCEAreserves the rights to require applicants to mail original hard-copy documentsfor further review and identification. No application materials will be returned,regardless of the outcome of the application.

VI. Admission and Selection

1. Verification of qualification

There will be a comprehensive review of the applicant’s foreign identity,highest degree diploma, academic performance, language proficiency,research plan, recommendations etc.

2. Interview assessment

Schools will conduct remote video interview assessment (ZOOM or TencentMeeting) in June for part of the overseas students who pass the qualificationexamination, focusing on students' language communication, academic abilityand comprehensive quality, etc. Offline interviews may still be arranged forstudents who are in China. Please refer to email for interview arrangement.

3.The best applicants will be selected according to the results of thequalification examination and interview.

Applicants can check their admission results on the International DevelopmentResearch Institute (School of International Education) website(http://idri.bucea.edu.cn/) during July and August. Admission letters and visaapplication forms for studying in China will be sent out accordance with theimmigration policy.

VII. Length of Program, Duration of Study and Conferral of Degree

Doctoral programs: 4 years;

Master programs: 2-3 years;

Length of study: the maximum learning period of doctoral programs is 6 years;the maximum learning period of master programs is 4-5 years (including the time of suspension or retention of student status).

Students who complete the credits stipulated in the teaching plan, completetheir graduation thesis and successfully pass the oral defense, meet therequirements for graduation, are granted the graduation certificate of doctor ormaster, and those who meet the requirements for doctor’s or master’s degreeare granted the doctor’s or master’s degree.

VIII. Tuition Fee (charged per academic year in RMB, excluding cost of course materials)

1. Chinese Doctoral programs: 30,000 RMB/year;

2. Chinese Master programs (MBA): 30,000 RMB/year;

3. Chinese Master programs (All Other Degrees): 25,000 RMB/year;

IX. Study Expenses

1. Accommodation: Double bedroom 60 yuan/day/bed, Triple bedroom 40yuan/day/bed

2. Living Cost: Around RMB 1000-1500 per month (estimate based onpersonal consumption level).

3. Medical Insurance: For the safety of international students in China,according to the regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education and BUCEA,international students are required to purchase medical insurance which is 800RMB/year. Please refer to the enrolment instructions for detailed information ofmedical insurance.

X. Scholarships

For Chinese taught postgraduate students, there are the following 4 types ofscholarships. Except for the freshman scholarship, the other three kinds of scholarships will be reviewed once a year from the second year of admission. Qualified students can apply directly. The specific scholarship funding measures shall be implemented in accordance with the Management and Implementation Measures of the International Student Scholarship of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

1. Freshman Scholarship: to fund students with full tuition for one academic year

2. First-class Scholarships: to subsidize all tuition fees for one academic year.

3. Second-class Scholarships: to subsidize half of the tuition fees for one academic year.

4. Special Contribution Scholarships: It is used to reward international students who have made positive oroutstanding achievements in academic, sports, art,cultural exchanges, and public welfare activities. The amount of subsidy doesnot exceed 5,000 yuan per person per academic year.

Scholarship applicants must abide by the law, respect teachers, have goodmoral character, study diligently, unite with classmates, actively participate ingroup activities, attend the classes on time and complete all the credits of thecourses required for the previous academic year with good grades. What’smore, applicants should have paid all tuition fees and meet the requirements ofother relevant rules and regulations.

The International Student Scholarships Jury will adhere to the principles ofstandardization, objectivity and fairness to select scholarship applicants.

XI. Monitoring, Complaints and Action for Misconduct

1. Under the guidance of the University’s Student Recruitment LeadershipGroup, BUCEA’s international student recruitment is jointly conducted by theBUCEA Admissions Office and the relevant schools/colleges and is subject tothe monitoring of the BUCEA Supervision Division. 2. Applicants are responsible for the truthfulness and accuracy of theinformation and documents they have submitted. New students’ admissionqualifications will be rechecked upon their entry to BUCEA. Failure to meet theadmission regulations for international students or any falsification ormisrepresentation will result in disqualification of enrollment in accordance withthe regulations of the educational authorities and BUCEA.
